I graduated from the Elam School of Fine Art in Auckland New Zealand in 1975 with a Diploma of Fine Art with Honours. After graduating I painted in Christchurch and had my first one man show at the CSA Gallery.
I then spent a considerable period of my early working career overseas in the UK, Brussels, the USA and Australia. Painting in studios in those countries, taking on various commissions, studying, and working with other artists. The most significant of these were doing a course in abstraction with Nieves Billymer in Manhattan. She had studied with Hans Hoffman and taught his ideas of composition. I also worked in a painting studio while there.
I did portrait commissions in NYC and painting commissions in Vermont. USA. and exhibited in a group show in Covent Garden. I also did a series of diverse jobs in the USA ranging from heading the art department of a summer school to cooking for a cowboy in the Teeton National park!
I lived in Sydney for 8 years from 1981 to 2002 and under took many commissions there including murals and works on paper for various hotels etc around Australia. I also had a one man show at Graphis Gallery in Sydney.
In 1992 I settled in Auckland with my two children and continued my studio work and exhibited regularly in Auckland (Chiaroscuro Gallery, Parnell gallery, Flagstaff Gallery and NKB Gallery) and other galleries round the country. As well as my studio practice I have continued to teach small groups painting and drawing for the last 24 years. You can see what we got up to in those classes in my student portal on my website.
We have now relocated to Nelson. Being originally from the South Island (educated in Timaru) it is wonderful to be back, surrounded by friendly people and the velvety misty hills of Nelson. At present we are planning to build a studio in the garden of our new house in South Street for me to paint in and I am looking to set up my teaching practise here too.
