Kim Filshie
Denny, Scotland
Kim was born in Scotland but has spent most of her life in New Zealand – spending the last 20 years or so in Nelson. She finds inspiration in the natural world – in views of the sea and sky, and of the local landscape in Nelson/Tasman.
Spending time sailing, she gains inspiration from exploring the islands and coastlines of the Abel Tasman, Durville Island and the Sounds. Images from these sailing adventures are captured through watercolour sketches and photographs, and these provide the reference material for her paintings.
Shifting between using oils and watercolours, Kim appreciates the richness of oils and the intensity of the colours and enjoys the vibrancy and immediacy of watercolours. Rather than capturing a literal image of a scene, Kim aims to convey a mood or feeling of a particular time and place - hopefully creating an image that resonates with others.
