Richmond, New Zealand

MaggyJ, MFA is a Richmond-based contemporary artist with over 25 years of experience. Her work merges traditional women’s crafts—such as crochet, knitting, and weaving—with unconventional pre-used materials transforming discarded items into intricate sculptural textiles addressing themes of consumerism, sustainability, environmental responsibility, and gender equality.

MaggyJ’s art challenges perceptions by bridging ‘feminine’ crafts with ‘masculine’ materials, aiming to elevate women’s skills within the art hierarchy. Her mission is to inspire behavioural change toward waste reduction and sustainability while fostering awareness of environmental survival and societal equality.

Running artists' workshops in her home-based studio, MaggyJ addresses feelings of isolation and loneliness in the COVID world by fostering these traditional methods. Her engaging practice, recognised both nationally and internationally for its thoughtful and playful approach, has been exhibited throughout New Zealand and globally, receiving national and international awards alongside contemporary artists.

Her art can be viewed at her home-based studio by appointment.
