Dumfries, Scotland

Sonja’s painting practice explores the often overlooked moments of everyday life. Informed by her experience as a stay-at-home mum, her work reflects on the repetition and quiet frustrations of daily routines, while also celebrating the fleeting moments of beauty and stillness that disrupt the monotony.

Her interest lies in the subtle pleasures of sight—those unexpected visual interludes that can stop one in their tracks. These typically unnoticed spaces, especially where shadows linger, hold a quiet allure. Within these shadows, Sonja finds a kind of magic—an invitation to slow down, appreciate the little things, and embrace a sense of calm.

For Sonja, painting these moments is a meditative act. By putting oil paint to canvas, she searches for beauty in the everyday, finds solace in the home as a sanctuary, and regains a sense of control through the act of painting.
